Here's what we know: everyone has their unique way of feeling appreciated. For some, a simple "great job" or "I genuinely appreciate your hard work" suffices. Others might prefer gestures such as a coffee break with the boss, lunch, physical awards amongst many others. However, one constant binds everyone together—everyone wants to feel valued within their organization.

In today's environment, security, asset protection, and loss prevention professionals are facing unprecedented challenges. They deal with daily occurrences of violence, individuals grappling with mental health and substance abuse issues, organized theft, and irate customers—just to name a few. The value of their work cannot be overstated, and it's crucial that we recognize this more than ever before. Often, these professionals go unnoticed and underappreciated when things are quiet, a fact they undoubtedly notice. Another challenge they encounter is feeling appreciated by their direct leaders but not by their colleagues or those they support regularly. Partners play a pivotal role in nurturing an appreciation culture, akin to how a coach's praise means more to a child than a parent's.

It's critical that our security professionals feel appreciated and valued in the current landscape. So, what can you do to strike the right balance between talking the talk and walking the walk, ensuring that everyone, not just the security department, genuinely values and appreciates their efforts? Here are a few lessons I've learned over the years while leading teams that can help convey your appreciation:

1. Keep It Simple: Sometimes, all it takes is a five-minute conversation to check in with your team and show you care. Personal connections are key to understanding your team and making it about more than just the job.

2. Pay Attention: Remember, your team members have lives outside of work and may carry personal baggage. If you notice something is amiss, take them aside and ask specific questions like, "I noticed you're not yourself today, is there anything I can do to help?"

3. Talk the Talk: Express your appreciation frequently and sincerely. Thank them, give them a high five, or offer an elbow bump if that's your style. Be specific in your praise. For instance, thank them for a positive guest interaction or merely for coming to work every day with a positive attitude.

4. Sing Their Praises: Here's where partners come into play. Share your team's achievements with your partners whenever possible. If you visit with operational partners, inform them of something positive about the team in advance so they can express their gratitude during the visit. Forward emails, guest comments, and positive interactions to your partners, asking them to send a quick note of thanks. These gestures go a long way in boosting team morale.

5. Walk the Walk: Show your team that you value them. Dedicate some visits purely for appreciation. Have a cup of coffee together, write a simple thank-you note, FaceTime them to express your gratitude, or set aside time each week on your calendar specifically for recognition. These simple acts can have a profound impact on your team's motivation.
